Upper Mustang Trekking

An incredible trekking opportunity in Nepal’s isolated trans-Himalayan mountains is provided by the Upper Mustang trek. The 17-day trip starts with excursions of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After that, we drive to Pokhara and fly the next day to Jomsom, where the trip starts. Upper Mustang, often known as the Last Forbidden Kingdom, was closed to visitors until the 1990s. Trekking in this area offers the chance to experience the uniqueness of the barren landscape, rocky trails, and stunning vistas of the Himalayan peaks, including Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and others.

Itinerary

01

Arrival in Kathmandu 1400m/4594ft.

We shall be met by a Mission Nepal representative at Kathmandu’s Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), after which they will drive us to the hotel of our choice. After checking in, we might visit the Kantipur Holidays office or have a nap. at the evening, a welcome supper with traditional Nepalese cuisine and a brief cultural presentation will take place at a typical Nepalese restaurant.

Kathmandu sightseeing

After breakfast today, we begin a guided tour of some of Kathmandu’s most revered historical and spiritual landmarks, which are also regarded as UNESCO World Heritage sites. We go to the historic Kathmandu Durbar Square, the holy Pashupatinath Hindu temple, the well-known Swayambhunath “Monkey Temple,” and the Buddhist shrine Bouddhanath, which is also one of the biggest stupas in the world. We check our gear with our trekking guide at lunchtime, meet the other participants, and talk about our trip at the Kantipur Holidays office.

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara 822m/2696ft.

After having breakfast, we proceed to Pokhara, which is also called The Lake City as it is home to numerous lakes. On reaching Pokhara, we are welcomed with awe-inspiring views of the Himalayas, including Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,794ft), Manaslu (8,156m/26,759ft), Machhapuchhre (6,993m/22,943ft), Annapurna’s five peaks, and others. Following this, we check-in at our hotel and take some rest. We can spend our time leisurely by boating in Fewa Lake and exploring the city’s quaint streets.

Fly to Jomsom 2713m/8898ft. then trek to Kagbeni 2810m/9216ft.

We will be taking an early morning flight to Jomsom today, which is well-known for its apples, strong winds, and unique landscape. The trek commences on an open trail that runs parallel to a picturesque valley. Our journey includes passing through Eaklibatti village before arriving at Jomsom, which is situated at the confluence of two rivers. The village boasts flat-roofed houses and the remnants of an ancient fortress, lending it a charming and scenic atmosphere.

Kagbeni to Chele 3050m/10007ft.

We begin our trip on a route adjacent to the Kali Gandaki River after having our permits examined. As we ascend a hill, the path is windswept and sandy. We quickly reach the Tangbe Village, where we enjoy the views of its quaint little lanes, whitewashed homes, and the apple orchards, barley, and buckwheat fields that surround it. We keep trekking till we reach Chele town by crossing a river, going through another town, and then walking up a ridge.

Chele to Syanbochen 3475m/11401ft.

This excursion will be harder than the others that we have done in the past. Taklam La Pass (3,624 m) and Dajori La Pass (3,735 m) are the two passes we will cross. We are given to breathtaking vistas of the Ramchung Cave, Yakawa Kang, Damodar Danda, and Tilicho along the route. After a while, we descend farther and reach Samar Village. After that, we hike up to a ridge on a trail that runs above the settlement. After there, we hike down a steep slope to a brook and carry on to Syanboche.

Syanbochen to Ghami 3520m/11549ft.

We will reach the 3,850-meter-high Yamda La pass on our walk today. We pass chortens, teahouses, and several quaint villages along the way. After traveling through picturesque barley fields and poplar woodlands, we arrive at 4,010-meter Nyi Pass. Next, we go down to Ghami, which is one of the biggest settlements in the Lo area. Large fields encircle the settlement, contributing to its allure and attractiveness.

Ghami to Tsarang 3870m/12697ft.

We begin our journey today with a descent along a rough, occasionally slick path. After that, we ascend once more after crossing the Ghami Khola on a suspension bridge. There are lovely mani walls along the walk. After that, we reach Tsarang village after traversing the 3,870-meter-high Tsarang La Pass. Situated atop the Charang Chu canyon, the town is accentuated in grandeur by a crimson gompa towards the east and a large castle.

Tsarang to Lo-Manthang 3730m/12238ft.

Today’s journey begins with a dip into a canyon, followed by a river crossing and an upward climb to the 3,950-meter-high Lo La pass. We are rewarded with breath-taking views of the charming Lo Manthang town at the summit of the pass. Next, we make our way down to Lo Manthang, a magnificent walled hamlet encircled by breathtaking scenery. The Himalayan mountains, including Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I, Bhrikuti Peak, and Damodar Kunda (pond), are magnificently visible from this location.

Explore Lo Manthang/ Acclimatization

A walled settlement called Lo Manthang is situated in Nepal’s isolated Upper Mustang area. Today, we explore the town’s three main gompas, or Buddhist monasteries: Jhampa, Thupchen, and Chhoeda. These gompas are significant cultural and religious landmarks in the area that have undergone professional restoration within the past 20 years. To get a taste of the local way of life and culture, we can also decide to hike to the picturesque village of Tingkhar, which is located northwest of Lo Manthang.

Lo-Mangthang to Drakmar 3810 m/12500ft.

On the way back from Lo-Manthang, we take a detour and go through Gyakar hamlet. The town is well-known for its magnificent rock paintings found at the 100-year-old Ghar Gompa. There is a local myth that states that wishes made at the Gompa will be granted. After touring the Gompa, we resume our hike to Drakmar, our overnight stop.

Drakmar to Ghiling 3806m/12484ft.

This day’s trek mostly consists of a downhill and starts early to avoid the high winds. Before reaching Ghiling, the trail travels via fields and a parched plateau. The walk can be difficult because of the strong gusts that blow across the face. Although Ghiling is mostly dry, it does provide breathtaking vistas of the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri peaks. In the evening, visitors are free to explore the village.

Ghiling to Chhuksang 3050m/10004ft.

We start our trek after breakfast, taking the same path that brought us to Lo Manthang. We may take in the breathtaking mountain views and stop to see the little settlements we pass along the route on the way back to Chhuksang.

Chhuksang to Jomsom 2700/8856ft.

On this last day of our adventure, we still have a long way to go. After starting to walk, we ultimately arrive at the Mustang trails’ terminus, where we connect with the Annapurna circuit trails. We stop at Kagbeni for a midday meal before continuing on our journey to Jomsom, where we will spend the night.

Fly back to Pokhara

We fly to Pokhara early in the morning. The journey itself is an incredible experience as the aircraft soars into a ravine sandwiched between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains. We can relax for the remainder of the day after reaching Pokhara.

Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

After breakfast, we say goodbye to the beautiful northern skyline of Pokhara and drive towards Kathmandu. This will be a journey along river banks with wonderful views of terraced hills and the rural Nepalese lifestyle. After reaching Kathmandu, we take a rest or do some souvenir shopping. To celebrate the successful completion of our journey, we will have a farewell dinner in the evening. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Final departure

Our adventure comes to an end today. A representative from Mission Nepal would drop us off at the airport around three hours before our departure. On the way back home, we’ll have plenty of time to organize our next vacation to the stunning country of Nepal.
