Trip Overview

Langtang Gosaikunda and Helambu Trek

Trekking throughout Nepal for 17 days, the Langtang, Gosaikunda, and Helambu Trek offers amazing vistas of the towering Himalayas, verdant forests, charming villages, and a diverse array of wildlife. After arriving by plane in Kathmandu, we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites before making our way to the Tamang hamlet of Syabrubesi, which is situated adjacent to the Bhote Koshi River and serves as the starting point of our walk. We reach Kyanjin Gompa on our way, and the next day we climb Tserko Ri to enjoy the breath-taking vistas of the Langtang Lirung (7,200m/23,622ft) range. Following that, we continue our ascent through the gorgeous Langtang Valley to arrive at Gosaikunda, a well-known Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage site. Gosaikunda Lake, which bears the same name, is a major attraction in the area. The mysterious healing properties of its shimmering water are believed to exist. Before arriving at the Laurebina Pass, we pass through several additional lakes on our route. We begin our journey in the Helambu Valley after descending the pass. The highest point of the journey is reaching the 3,800-meter top of Ama Yangri. Reportedly, the vista of the Himalayas from the summit is on par with that of Poon Hill, with Mount Shishapangma and the Langtang ranges looking almost in reach. For the next four days, we climb throughout the Helambu region before returning to Kathmandu to complete our amazing mountain adventure.

We head uphill after departing the Lama Hotel, enjoying the picturesque mountain landscape with its many waterfalls. The snowy peaks of the Langtang mountain range come into view as we get closer to the lush fields of Ghoda Tabela. We then make our way up the rising valley, passing by a couple of makeshift herder camps. We pass a Buddhist monastery before arriving in Langtang hamlet, which was damaged by the earthquake in April 2015. We keep traveling in the direction of Mundu.

Although today’s hike is short, it is important to take it slow and avoid arriving at Gosaikunda too soon because increasing our altitude gradually will improve our acclimatization. Shin Gompa to Gosaikunda 4460m/14633ft.

The Annapurnas, Hiunchuli, Manaslu, Ganesh, and Langtang are just a few of the magnificent panoramic panoramas of the Himalayas that we will be able to see today. We will spend the majority of the day following a ridge, which will give us a view of the first of the holy lakes. Gosaikunda (4380m), the third lake and one of Nepal’s most popular pilgrimage destinations, holds special religious and cultural significance for the people of that country. The lake is flanked by nine additional lakes and surrounded by mountains on almost all sides. Each year, hundreds of Hindu pilgrims come to the lake for a holy bath on Janai Purnima in August. It is thought that the central rock in the lake represents the remnants of a Shiva shrine. We are going to stay overnight in Gosaikunda.

Gosaikunda to Ghopte 3439m/11283ft.

We continue our tour along the edge of the lake and then climb up towards the Laurebina Pass (4610m). Our current trekking area terminates at this pass, which divides it from the Helambu region, which descends to the Melamchi valley. The track is well-defined and has cairns to assist us even though it crosses moraines and can be uneven at times. We pass three more tiny lakes and ascend a short hill to get breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape as we make our way to the pass. Next, we go through Surya Kunda to reach Ghopte, our overnight destination.

Today’s walk passes by a stupa and over a little brook that is below Tarkeghyang. After passing through woodlands, we arrive at Ama Yangri, the highest point of our journey at 3,800 meters. A stupa and Buddhist prayer flags adorn the hill’s summit, and we are rewarded with breath-taking vistas of Mt. Shishapangma and the Langtang mountains. We think we could reach out and touch the mountains because they seem so close. As we descend, we frequently come across yaks munching in the underbrush before entering a forest. Eventually, our walk crosses a broken-stone path and brings us to the lovely Sherpa settlement of Tarkeghyang. Nestled amidst the breathtaking scenery of the area, we will spend the night at Tarkheghyang.
