Trip Overview

Everest High Passes Trek

Discover the undiscovered gems of the Khumbu region while exploring the well-known Everest trails on the thrilling Everest High Passes Trek in the Nepalese Himalayas. This expedition includes climbing Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri, seeing Everest base camp, and viewing the picturesque Gokyo Lakes in addition to traversing three high passes: Kongma La Pass (5,535/18,159ft), Cho La Pass (5420m/17,782ft), and Renjo La Pass (5,340m/17,520ft). We also pass through the Sherpa settlement of Marlung, the monastery village of Thame, and the secluded and pristine Nangpa La Valley on our trip.

The Everest High Passes Trek is a great option for the daring hiker looking for a strenuous trip in the Everest region that involves traversing high mountain passes. However, the Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes – 18 Days would be more appropriate if a little easier trek covering the Gokyo lakes, Kala Patthar, and Everest base camp is desired.

Phakding to Namche Bazaar 3440m/11283ft.

We follow the path that heads north up the Benkar valley, through a beautiful pine grove. We continue beyond Chumoa and cross the Dudh Koshi River to arrive at Monjo, the gateway to Everest National Park. We then walk alongside the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers after passing through the village of Jorsale and a suspension bridge. We make a sharp ascent to arrive in Namche Bazaar, the main centre of Sherpa culture. We can view Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse before reaching Namche Bazaar if the weather is right.

Acclimatization at the Namche Bazaar

Today is the day to become acclimated. The hub of Khumbu’s commerce is Namche Bazaar. Fantastic views of Everest and a number of neighboring Himalayan peaks, including Thamserku, Kongdi RI, and Ama Dablam, are possible from Namche. Here are the Everest Photo Gallery and the Sherpa Culture Museum. Similarly, you can hike up to the airstrip at Syangboche, which is situated above the settlement. From Syangboche, you may get great views of Namche below and, in the distance, the Himalayan hills around the town. Likewise, you can go to the Everest glimpse Hotel, where every window offers a glimpse of the peaks of Everest.

Along the way, we will be treated to breathtaking views of some of the world’s most famous mountain peaks, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kongde, and many more. Once we reach Tengboche, we will visit the largest monastery in the region and take in the stunning views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and other peaks. We will spend the night in Tengboche.

We will hike through stunning woodlands that are home to a variety of trees, including rhododendron, conifers, and birches. We will be able to take in breathtaking views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Mount Everest along the route. We will traverse the Imja River and go via Devuche on our way down to Pangboche. From here, we will travel on toward the Lobuche River and the Imja Valley before ascending to Dingboche. Beautiful fields with stone walls surrounding them, shielding crops like potatoes, barley, and buckwheat from the harsh weather and animals, can be seen at Dingboche. A stunning view of the Himalayas and the Pangboche Monastery may be had from the top Pangboche routes.

Acclimatization at Dingboche

Hikers and mountaineers traveling to Imja Tse, Ama Dablam, or Mount Everest frequently stop at Dingboche. Beautiful fields with stone walls around them to protect potatoes, barley, and buckwheat from cold winds and grazing livestock can be found around the area. At Dingboche we stop for a day so we can get used to the altitude. We hike to Nagarjun Hill, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of Makalu, Lhotse, Chalotse, Tawache, Ama Dablam, and other nearby mountains, during our break.

Dingboche to Chhukung, climb Chhukung Ri 5546m/18196ft.

Traveling on the trail, we cross the Imja Khola valley, encircled by high Himalayan peaks, and pass through enclosed stone fields. The trail takes us to Bibre, where yak herders live. We are met with breathtaking views of the majestic Ama Dablam and the Amphu Labsa mountains just across the valley from here. We reach Chhukung after a quick thirty-minute trek when the track splits with ice streams further on. We have lunch and then start the hike upto Chhukung Ri, which includes some simple scrambling near the top. Our reward for reaching the peak is an amazing view of the Ama Dablam and Amphu Labcha peaks, which are located just across the valley. We then descend back to Chhukung and spend the night there.

Cross to Kongma La pass, trek to Lobuche 5535m/18160ft.

To reach Kongma La Pass, the highest point of the entire route, we set off on our walk today early in the morning. There are two paths we can select from: walking back to Bibre and hiking on the trail above the Niyang Khola, or taking a trail over a hill northwest of Chhukung, crossing the Nuptse Glacier moraines. Cairns and Buddhist prayer flags set the pass’s peak apart. Today’s journey’s last descent from the pass is the hardest part. The trail heads north after cresting the far-side moraine, passing through the Khumbu Glacier before arriving at Lobuche, where we spend the night.

Note: Climbing over Kongma La Pass is an elective. We can decide not to go over the difficult Kongma La Pass today and instead go straight from Chhukung to Lobuche.

Lobuche to Gorak Shep , visit Everest Base Camp 5364m/17599ft.

Following the Khumbu Glacier’s lateral moraine, we continue our journey and see Everest’s north ridge as well as those of Pumori, Mahalangur, Lingtern, Khumbutse, Nuptse, and other mountains. We ascend quickly to Thangma Riju, where breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Himalayas await us. After that, we hike up a hard trail to the Changri Glacier’s summit. When we get at Gorak Shep, the Himalayas encircle us entirely. Following a short break, we travel to Everest Base Camp via rocky dunes, streams, and moraines. This is the base camp of Everest, the highest mountain in the world. We travel back to Gorak Shep for the night after seeing the majestic Nuptse, Khumbuste, and Pumori mountains from this vantage point.

Alternatively, as many people think that Kala Patthar’s sunset vista is even more stunning than its sunrise perspective, we can decide to visit the site today rather than the next day.

12

Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar, then to Lobuche 5545m/18193ft.

In order to see Mount Everest dawn, we set out early in the morning on our trip to Kala Patthar. This is a strenuous trek that has to be prepared for wind and low temperatures. Stunning peaks like Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Everest, and Nuptse surround us as we trek. We ascend Kala Patthar for several hours and are rewarded with amazing views of Mt. Everest and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. After that, we spend the night in Lobuche.

If you decide to visit Everest Base Camp instead, you’ll need to get up early for breakfast because the hike takes longer. At Gorak Shep, the two groups will get together for lunch.

Lobuche to Dzongla 4830m/15847ft.

We descend onto a path that parallels the Khumbu Glacier from Lobuche. When our trail splits into two, we choose the right one. We have a better look at the towering Awi Peak while traveling. We pass through a stupa with background tombstones. We stroll for a while before starting to climb. We observe Chola Tsho Lake closing as we ascend. We continue, passing by a lake that is smaller than Chola Tsho Lake. We arrive in Dzongla after bridging the Chola Khola.

Trek to Gokyo via Chola Pass 4800m/15749ft.

Views of the Cho La Lake, the Ama Dablam Mountain range, and the towering Cholatse mountain to the west and south, respectively, open up as we ascend. The steep incline and rocks that need scrambling make the hike difficult. The trail winds around a chasm, making the last ascent to the Cho La a little challenging. However, prayer flags and cairns mark the pass’s summit, which offers stunning vistas of towering peaks in every direction. The longest glacier in Nepal, the Ngozumpa glacier, is encountered during the lengthy but manageable descent to Thangnak. We reach the Gokyo Lakes—the second and third after crossing the glacier—as well as the village where we will spend the night—Gokyo Village, which is situated on the edge of the third lake.

Rest day in Gokyo: Climb Gokyo Ri , tour 4th and 5th Gokyo lakes 5357m/17576ft.

We want to climb Gokyo Ri today and take in the breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountain range. Situated just three kilometers north of Gokyo Village, the fourth Gokyo Lake will also be open for our exploration. We will then carry on walking to the fifth lake. “Scoundrel’s Viewpoint,” which is situated at the edge of the fifth lake, offers an amazing view. The enormous Ngozumpa Glacier and a number of mountain summits, including Cho-Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu, will be seen. We are going to Gokyo Village again later in the day, and we will stay there overnight.

Gokyo to Marlung via Renjo La Pass 5360m/17586ft.

We set out early in the morning to hike a considerable distance. We first stroll by Dudh Pokhari (lake) for around two hours, after which we descend in the direction of Renjo La pass. We are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Rolwaling and Himalayan mountains during the trek. When we arrive at Renjo La pass, the scenery resembles that of Gokyo Ri, with Gokyo Village and the third Gokyo Lake below the Ngozumpa Glacier. Magnificent views of Mount Everest may also be found at the top of the route. We descend the pass, crossing loose scree and descending a stone staircase to the south side of Angladumba Tsho Lake. On the other hand, it may be a little risky during our descent if there is ice on the trail. We pass Relama Tsho and Renjo Lake on our way farther. We eventually descend to Lumde, a little valley lined with massive boulders, where we might come upon a support lodge that might or might not be staffed. We go an additional hour from Lumde to Marlung, which is situated on the Bhote Koshi River’s east bank.

17

Trek to Namche Bazaar 3440m/11283ft.

Following the ancient path that Tibetan traders have long utilized, we will descend from Marulung to Thame. We will travel down to Taranga and cross the Bhote Koshi River to get there. Before we ultimately get in Thame, the track will continue to descend and cross two bridges. Seen perched on a hill west of Thame is the renowned monastery known as the Thame Gompa. From here, we will make our way down a trail that will eventually take us through several tiny settlements and bring us to Namche Bazaar. In the Everest region, Namche Bazaar is thought to be the biggest settlement.

Trek Back to Lukla 2800m/9184ft.

We begin our adventure by walking downhill, over the swiftly flowing Dudh Koshi River and its tributaries over a number of bridges. The landscape progressively gets more level and organic. We love taking walks on wide plains, through rhododendron and pine forests, and across distant snow-capped summits. We travel past Sherpa communities along the way, and we observe their strong Buddhist beliefs from the prayer stones and flags that are a part of their customs. After a while, we arrive at Lukla, where we use the time to relax and think back on the amazing adventures of the previous several weeks. We have reached the end of our arduous journey across the mountains and high passes.

Fly Back To Kathmandu

To ensure safety, the flights from Lukla to Kathmandu are typically booked during the morning. We shall be alone for the full day once we arrive in the capital city. We have the option of shopping for mementos to take home or unwinding in our hotel room. We’ll have a goodbye supper in the evening to celebrate finishing our mountain hike successfully.
