Fly to Lukla then Trek to Phakding

The journey starts with a 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. One of the world’s most spectacular short flights is the one to Lukla. The sole runway at Tenzing Hillary Airport, which is perched atop a hill, descends into a vast, chasm-like valley below. The Lukla airfield is fascinating, and the flight is considered an exciting adventure in and of itself. It is surrounded by huge mountains and desolate hills.

We are traveling to the entrance of the Khumbu Region, home of the Sherpas, with this flight to Lukla. The air is crisp and fresh, a sensation unique to the Himalayan region, and the steep terrain comes into sharp relief. We set out to trek from Lukla to Cheplung Village, from where you can see Mount Khumbila in the clear.

We go slowly downhill from Cheplung to the settlement of Phakding. From this vantage point, the trail is surrounded by towering hills that resemble enormous emerald mounds. From here, Kusum Kanguru Mountain is easily seen.

North of Lukla, in the Dudh Koshi River Valley, is the settlement of Phakding, which is home to numerous lodges and guesthouses that serve hikers. We are going to stay the night at Phakding.

Phakding - Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar, a well-known mountain settlement, may be reached by following the trail that opens up further after breakfast at Phakding. Several minor settlements, including Jorsale and Monjo, are traversed en route to Namche. Monjo is where the Sagarmatha National Park begins, located to the north of Phakding. Before reaching Namche, the trail travels through the national park.

Alongside little brooks, the stunning Dudh Kosi river, evergreen-deciduous forests, and dense alpine woods lies the Sagarmatha National Park trail. A lovely mood is created by the thick stands of pine and cedar that blanket the area.

After breakfast at Phakding, the trail continues to open up more, leading to the well-known mountain settlement of Namche Bazaar. The path to Namche passes via a number of small settlements, such as Jorsale and Monjo. Situated north of Phakding, Monjo marks the start of the Sagarmatha National Park. The trail passes through the national park before arriving in Namche.

The Sagarmatha National Park trail winds through dense alpine woodlands, evergreen-deciduous forests, little streams, and the breathtaking Dudh Kosi river. The vast stands of pine and cedar that cover the area provide a beautiful atmosphere.

Acclimatization Day - Hike to Everest View Hotel

Following breakfast in Namche, we will trek to the Everest View Hotel at 3780 meters with only a few essentials packed. Hiking to a higher level and sleeping at a lower elevation is the most effective strategy to acclimate. We’ll trek up around 400 meters and then descend back to Namche.

On the other hand, the Everest View Hotel’s panoramic view of the Everest Himalayas is well-known. We can drink coffee while taking in the breathtaking parallel view of Everest and other Khumbu Mountains from the world’s highest hotel.

Namche - Tengboche

At the Phungki Thanka hamlet, an easy trek from Namche leads out towards the Dudh Kosi Valley. There are breathtaking views of Mount Everest from the settlement. To get to the village of Tengboche, hike upwards along the trail that skirts the right bank of the Dudh Koshi River.

From Namche to Tengboche, there are beautiful rivers, landscapes, and Himalayan peaks to see. At the meeting point of the Dudh Koshi and Imja Khola rivers, the settlement of Tengboche is surrounded by towering slopes blanketed in rhododendron trees.

The largest monastery in the Khumbu region, Tengboche Monastery, is another reason for the village’s fame. Surrounded by woodlands home to Impeyan Pheasants and eagles, the Tengboche Monastery is considered by Buddhists to be the spiritual center of the Khumbu region. The monastery is a hamlet with clear views of Mount Everest, Mount Ama Dablam, and many other peaks.

Tengboche - Dingboche

We start our hike to the settlement of Dingboche after breakfast, following a trail that spans the Imja River on a suspension bridge. Along the route, we’ll pass by Pangboche hamlet. Another few hours get us to Dingboche, where we will spend the night.

Known as the Khumbu’s “Summer Valley,” Dingboche is surrounded by a kilometer-long wall that was constructed to shield the village’s crops from the chilly winds that come down the Imja Valley. From Dingboche, one may enjoy graceful views of Lhotse, the Ama Dablam, and the Island Peak.

Acclimatization Day, Hike to Nagarjuna Peak

Spending time at Dingboche and acclimatizing is highly recommended through a hike up Nagarjuna Peak. Nagarjuna Peak is situated on a hill at the edge of the Chhukung valley, somewhat above Dingboche, at an elevation of 5100 meters.

It is a hard hike that is windy, hilly, and uphill. After 3–4 hours of walking, we will arrive at Nagarjuna Peak, from where we will see a 360-degree view of mountains, including Ama Dablam (6856m), Taboche Peak (6367m), Thamserku (6608m), Kangtega (6685m), Lobuche East (6119m), and Lobuche West (6145m).

On a clear day, you might also be lucky enough to catch breathtaking views of Mount Makalu, the fifth-tallest peak in the world. This is also a great place to see the Pheriche Valley panorama. It’s a short, easy hike back to Dingboche, downhill.

Dingboche - Lobuche

As we travel from Dingboche to Dhungla, we will pass the Trekkers Aid Post at 4210 meters at Pheriche. With assistance from The Himalayan Rescue Association, it is managed by Western Volunteer Doctors. Here, you can obtain any essentials that you might need or have ran out of.

We then depart for Chupki Lhara, a rock-strewn vantage point that offers us a 360-degree panorama of the Everest Himalaya. From there, the route descends much lower to the Khumbu Glacier moraine.

From the moraine, we can see mountain summits like Khumbutse, the Mahalangur Himal, Lingtren, and the Pumori. Mount Nuptse also towers over us once we cross the glacier. When we get to Lobuche, we’ll spend the night in our guesthouse.

Lobuche - Everest Base Camp - Gorak Shep

After breakfast, we’ll start the most anticipated day of the trip with a leisurely stroll. To prevent altitude sickness, we walk slowly beside Khumbu Glacier, the highest glacier in the world, after leaving Lobuche.

We will go from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, which is at 5181 meters/16994 feet, a serene place with a few lodges, in around two to three hours. The Everest Mountains encircle Gorak Shep, a frozen lakebed covered with sand.

The route then climbs to the top of the cliff and eventually reaches the Everest Base Camp. Best wishes! We’ve arrived at the base of the world’s tallest peak! From here, the beautiful Khumbutse and Lingtren mountains, as well as the breathtaking Khumbu Icefall, are readily seen.

We’ll spend some time at the base camp after shooting hundreds of pictures and taking a minute to process everything we’ve accomplished before returning to Gorak Shep to spend the night.

Gorak Shep - Kala Pathar - Dzongla

The best vantage point to see Mt. Everest and the breathtaking Himalayan range is Kalapattar (5545m/18188ft), which is the starting point of the tour. After a hygienic breakfast, return to Gorekshep by foot and descend to Dzongla, which is 4830 meters/15840 feet.

Among the highlights of our trip is an early morning hike from Gorak Shep to the highest point on our trek, Kala Patthar. Numerous peaks, including Mount Everest, Nuptse, Chagataye, Lhotse, and the Pumori, may be seen from the well-known vantage point of Kala Patthar.

Our journey to Kala Patthar will start before sunrise because this viewpoint offers a wonderful view of the rising sun. The mountains surrounding Mount Everest turn gold as the sun rises, changing their silver hue.

We will return to Gorak Shep and make our way to Dzongla, where we will spend the night, after spending some time at Kala Patthar.

Dzongla - Dragnak/Thangnak via Cho La pass

I think this is going to be the hardest day on our vacation. We start with a strenuous climb from Dzongla to cross the sometimes difficult Cho La pass, which is situated at 5420 meters. However, given that we had spent the last week walking at high altitudes, it is feasible.

The trail is a constant, hard trek uphill, but the vistas are captivating and well worth the effort once you reach the Pass. After crossing the Cho La Pass, we will gradually descend to Thanga, where we will spend the night.

Dragnak/Thangna - Gokyo

We re-climb from Thagna to reach the Gokyo Lakes, making up for the altitude we lost on the previous day when we descended from the Chola Pass. It is not, however, as difficult and steep as yesterday’s Pass trail.

We traverse the 36-kilometer-long Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas, on our route. The glacier is really beautiful. We should get in Gokyo in time for lunch after the Glacier.

The Gokyo town is situated next to Mount Cho-Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world, and the third of the six lakes. One of the most breathtaking backgrounds of our entire journey is created by the Himalayas, which are reflected on the motionless lake’s surface. We will explore the village, Gokyo Lake, and Dudh Pokhari Lake after lunch. After supper, we’ll head back to our guesthouse to spend the night.

Gokyo - Gokyo RI - Gokyo - Lukla via Helicopter

Gokyo RI is yet another excellent highlight of this journey. We will trek up to the 5483-meter summit of Gokyo RI early in the morning after breakfast. Gokyo RI is clearly a difficult climb, requiring three to four hours of tough, steep ascent on a rough trail.

Once we reach the summit, you will be astounded by the stunning panorama of the Gokyo town perched on the brink of the third lake, with Cho Oyu, Cholatse, and the enormous Ngozumpa Glacier casting a shadow over it. From here, the vistas of the Himalayas surpass what we had at Kala Patthar.

The four highest mountains in the world—Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu—will be directly in front of you. Other Himalayan mountains including Kusum Kanguru, Thamserku, K-4, Kangtega, Taboche, Cholatse, Nuptse, Changtse, and Pumori will encircle us on all sides in addition to these! It is unlike anything we have ever seen to see the sun’s rays kiss the tall Everest that towers over all the other summits.

P.S. From Kala Pattar, Nuptse appears to be higher than Everest. As you stand atop Gokyo Ri, you will have a close-up view of the Himalayas.

After breakfast, we’ll return to our guesthouse in Gokyo and wait for our helicopter. Prepare yourself for an exhilarating helicopter journey back to Lukla once that arrives. Take in one last glimpse of the breathtaking Himalaya range while admiring the picturesque overhead views of the path you have been trekking on for the past two weeks.
