Every year in November, Nepal does something that surprises visitors. Dogs, from pets to street dogs to police dogs, are garlanded with marigolds, marked with red tika, and fed their favorite food. This is Kukur Tihar, the festival of dogs, and it is one of the most loved days of Nepal’s five-day festival of lights.
Most Nepali calendar sources place Kukur Tihar on Sunday, 8 November 2026 (Kartik 22, 2083 BS), and Tihar overall runs from 7 to 11 November 2026. A couple of calendars list the day a little differently, and Laxmi Puja is the date most often shown shifted by a day. Check the official Nepali patro or the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee announcement to confirm the exact timing for your location.
Here is how Tihar 2026 fits together:
| Day | Festival | Date (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kaag Tihar (crows) | Sat, 7 Nov |
| 2 | Kukur Tihar (dogs) | Sun, 8 Nov |
| 3 | Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja (cows and the goddess of wealth) | Sun 8 Nov or Mon 9 Nov, depending on the source |
| 4 | Govardhan Puja, Goru Tihar, Mha Puja | Tue, 10 Nov |
| 5 | Bhai Tika (brothers and sisters) | Wed, 11 Nov |
Kukur Tihar (also called Kukur Puja) is the second day of Tihar, Nepal’s version of Diwali. On this day, dogs are thanked for their loyalty, protection and companionship. Kukur means “dog” in Nepali.
Unlike most festivals, nobody is excluded from the celebration. Family pets, neighborhood strays, guard dogs and working police dogs all take part.

There are three common explanations, and many families believe all of them.
1. The dog as guardian of Yama’s gates. In Hindu belief, Yama, the god of death, is guarded by two dogs. Honoring dogs on this day is seen as a way to please Yama and ask for protection from untimely death and misfortune.
2. Bhairav’s companion. The dog is linked to Bhairav, a fierce form of Shiva. A dog is also traditionally seen as a vehicle and companion of the deity.
3. Yudhishthira’s loyal dog. In the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira refused to enter heaven without the dog that had followed him faithfully to the end. The story is often told as a lesson that loyalty deserves honor.
Beyond the myths, the festival says something simple about Nepali culture: animals are part of the household and part of the spiritual order.
The ritual is short and affectionate:
Police and army dog units across Nepal hold public ceremonies, and in the Kathmandu Valley you will often see people garlanding stray dogs on the street.
Tihar honors the animals that share human life:
Laxmi Puja brings the glow of lights, rangoli and oil lamps (diyo), while Bhai Tika closes the festival with sisters applying tika to their brothers. In the evenings, groups sing Deusi-Bhailo door to door throughout Tihar.
If you have a dog or want to join in, keep the dog’s health in mind:
