01

Arrive in Kathmandu 1400m/4594ft

When we arrive at the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, a representative from Mission Nepal will greet us and take us to the hotel of our choice. 02

Kathmandu Valley UNESCO Sightseeing Tour

We will embark on a guided tour of some of Kathmandu’s most well-known historical and spiritual sites this morning following breakfast, many of which are also UNESCO World Heritage sites. We visit the famous Swayambhunath “Monkey Temple,” the revered Hindu temple Pashupatinath, the ancient Durbar Square in Kathmandu, and the Buddhist shrine Bouddhanath, which is one of the largest stupas in the world. At midday, at the Kantipur Holidays office, we meet the other participants, go over our itinerary, and have a gear check with our hiking guide.

Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding 2652m/8699ft.

You will take a plane to Lukla today, where your Everest journey will commence. At the domestic airport, you will be dropped off in preparation for your early flight to Lukla. We have breathtaking views of the high summits during the brief trip. You will go to Phakding, a charming town on the fringes of the Dudh Koshi River Valley in Khumbu, from Lukla. You can get an amazing glimpse of the Kusum Kanguru Peak and other equally scary mountains along the route.

Phakding to Namche Bazaar 3440m/11283ft.

We follow the path that heads north up the Benkar valley, through a beautiful pine grove. We continue beyond Chumoa and cross the Dudh Koshi River to arrive at Monjo, the gateway to Everest National Park. We then walk alongside the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers after passing through the village of Jorsale and a suspension bridge. We make a sharp ascent to arrive in Namche Bazaar, the main centre of Sherpa culture. We can view Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse before reaching Namche Bazaar if the weather is right.

Acclimatization at Namche Bazaar

Today is the day to become acclimated. The hub of Khumbu’s commerce is Namche Bazaar. Namche offers breathtaking views of Thamserku, Kongdi RI, Ama Dablam, and several other nearby Himalayan peaks in addition to Mount Everest. Here are the Everest Photo Gallery and the Sherpa Culture Museum. You can also trek up to the top of the hamlet, to the Syangboche Airstrip. From Syangboche, you can see Namche below and, in the distance, the Himalayan peaks around the town. Likewise, you can go to the Everest glimpse Hotel, where every window offers a glimpse of the peaks of Everest.

Namche to Dole 4200m/13776ft.

The trail until Kyangjuma is very straightforward, but after that it gets steep as we climb through forests of rhododendron, which eventually give place to forests of juniper and pine. When the rhododendrons are in full flower in the spring, this hike is very spectacular. A number of Kharkas, summer communities where the Sherpas bring their herds of yaks to graze in the high pastures, are passed along the route. Along the way, we pass via the communities of Gyele (3960m) and Tongba (3950m) before arriving in Dole, where we spend the night in one of the few hotels. All day long, the views of Tawache (6542m) and Khumbila are very stunning!

Dole to Machhermo 4400m/14432ft.

Our trekking route ascends to 4,360 meters in Luza and 4220 meters in Lambara. With sporadic Kharkas along the way, the terrain is mostly steep as we climb through shrub juniper. Through sandy spurs and breathtaking views of the river below, we continue down the valley until we reach Machhermo at 4410 meters. One of the best known accounts of such encounters occurred here in 1974, when a terrifying incident included the murder of three yaks and an attack on a Sherpa woman by the renowned Yeti.

Machhermo to Gokyo Lake 4700m/15416ft.

Our reward for reaching the summit of a hill today was a breathtaking view of the valley and the massive 8201-meter-tall Cho-Oyu Mountain. After the ridge, the valley opens up and we pass through Pangka, which is 4890 meters above sea level, before lowering ourselves to the river’s edge. Following that, we start a rigorous climb up to the Ngozumpa Glacier’s final moraine. A tiny lake with green Brainy ducks living in it is another sight we encounter on our journey.

Hike to Gokyo RI 5360m/17880ft.

We get up early and make our way to the summit of Gokyo-Ri, a two-hour climb that allows us to see the magnificent Mahalangur Himalayan range in all its splendor. As we approach the peak, we are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama that includes the tall Cho-Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, and Tawache mountains in addition to the stunning view of the Ngozumpa glacier, which is the largest glacier in Nepal.

Returning from Namche, you’ll take the same path to Lukla, passing by man-made walls, gompas, prayer flags, and chortens, among other colorful constructions. You may hear the rushing waters of the Dudh Koshi River as you cross it again via suspension bridges. Lukla is where you’ll spend the night after progressively climbing out of Cheplung.
