Upper Dolpo Trek is a land beyond the Himalayas, which was strictly forbidden to preserve its traditions and way of life. It was only opened to the outside world for trekking in the early 1990s. The upper dolpo trekking route passes through formidable mountain ranges – Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Kanjirowa. The trekkers of this region get to experience the wild remoteness, the stunning mountain scenery and the friendly local people.
The holy mountain called “Crystal Mountain” attracts the hundreds of pilgrim travelers every year. The people of this region mostly speak Tibetan languages. The people still practice the pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion. The Upper Dolpo trekking region also owes its fame to Peter Matthiessen and David Snellgrove. Their novels of “The Snow Leopard” and “Himalayan Pilgrimage” have contributed to the mystique and attraction of Dolpo.
The Upper Dolpo Trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. This trek is best to do in the summer and monsoon season.
