Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek

The 14-day Annapurna Circle Trek is a well-known and well-liked trekking route that begins and ends in Kathmandu. We visit several World Heritage Sites spread out around the city before starting the hike. The walk itself starts in Syange and takes hikers across the Annapurna region, offering a varied and constantly shifting environment and cultural experience. We will traverse the difficult Thorong La pass (5,416m/17,769ft) as we circle the Annapurna range, explore the beautiful but arid Manang valley, and stop at Muktinath, a place of profound spiritual significance to both Hindus and Buddhists. We will also go up to Poon Hill, which provides amazing sweeping views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges.

Highlights of the Annapurna Circuit trek

  • Unmatched excitement in the mountains
  • Magnificent vistas of the Machhapuchhre
  • Beautiful scenery in Muktinath and Manang
  • From Jomsom to Pokhara, take a plane across the Thorong La Pass.

Itinerary

01

Arrival in Kathmandu1400m/4594ft.

When we arrive at the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, a representative from Kantipur Holidays will greet us and take us to the hotel of our choice. We may visit the Kantipur Holidays office or take a nap after checking in. In the evening, there will be a welcome supper in a traditional Nepalese restaurant, complete with real Nepali cuisine and a brief cultural performance.

Drive from Kathmandu to Synge 1100m/3609ft.

We left the hotel early in the morning to head to Syange in Kathmandu. During the journey, the stunning Himalayan Mountain range, verdant hills, winding rivers, terraced farms, and other natural features are revealed to us. Upon arriving in Syange, we make sure to have a good night’s sleep in order to be rested and prepared for the next day’s climb.

Syange to Dharapani 1960m/6431ft.

When we get up in Syange after breakfast, we head toward the Manang district by way of a big bridge that crosses it at Tal. We travel through fields of barley, rice, and potatoes, and we are entertained by the scenic waterfalls. After going through the town of Kodo, we will ultimately reach Dharapani, which is one of the largest communities in the Manang valley.

Dharapani to Chame 2630m/8629ft.

We continue our journey today after breakfast, navigating through multiple landslide-prone areas and ascending a few steep and forested peaks until arriving at the village of Chame. We will be able to stop along the route to take in the breathtaking views of Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Annapurna IV (7,525m). In addition, we will discover a few tiny hot springs that offer the ideal setting for some downtime.

Chame to Pisang 3300m/10827ft.

We start our hike after breakfast and make our way along a narrow, steep valley until we catch a sight of the Paungda Danda rock race. Rising 1,500 meters above the riverbed, this striking rock face has a sharp curvature. From this vantage point, Annapurna II to the south and Pisang Peak to the northeast are breathtakingly visible. Subsequently, we descend gradually to the Manang Valley level, where we may enjoy the breathtaking scenery all around.

06

Pisang to Manang 3570m/11713ft.

We are given two options for getting to Manang after Pisang, and we choose the upper route that passes through Ghyaru. There is little doubt that this approach offers breath-taking vistas of Pisang Peak, Mt. Annapurna, and other nearby summits. Manang is closer to us, and the weather gets colder and drier. On the other hand, a quick trip to the Barge Monastery—the biggest monastery in the Manang District—will cheer us up.

Acclimatization at Manang

As today is our acclimatization day, we take a quick hike to Lake Gangapurna or Bhojo Gumba to keep our bodies in shape for the trails ahead. Instead, we could trek to Vraga Village and pay a visit to the Himalayan Rescue Association, which can provide us with important details regarding Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Visit Ice Lake if you’re an enthusiastic hiker who wants to go on hikes to nearby locations. At an elevation of 4600 meters, Ice Lake is approximately a 4-hour journey away. Magnificent views of the mountains, alpine valleys, and scattered communities may be seen from Ice Lake.

Manang to Yak Kharka 4110m/13485ft.

Starting at Manang village, the trail goes past a stream and climbs up to Tenki village, which sits above Manang village. From there, the trail climbs farther northwest up Jarsang Khola Valley and continues to leave Marshyangdi Valley. Following this valley north, the path rises and passes through a few fields and a juniper tree scrub. The small town of Ghunsa, which may be identified by its cluster of flat mud roofs, is passed by the trail just below the trailhead. The trail crosses fields where horses and yaks graze at this point. The trail passes via a picturesque meadow with an ancient Mani wall after crossing a small river on a wooden bridge, and then it comes to the little town of Yak Kharka.

Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi 4600m/15092ft.

You have to hike up to Thorang Phedi. Finally, we come to the village of Ledar after crossing a suspension bridge. After ascending over massive boulders, we finally reach Thorang Phedi, the last village before Thorong La. On this tour, we get to see some of the most beautiful peaks, like Mt. Gundang, Mt. Syagang, Thorung Peak, and Mt. Khatungkan.

Thorong Phedi to Muktinath 3800m/12468ft. crossing over Thorong La Pass 5416m/17770ft.

Our main goal for today is to reach Thorong La Pass, one of the highest passes in the world. We will travel east to west via the pass that connects Manang and Muktinath. This direction is regarded as the easiest and safest. We will begin our mountain trek to reach the pass at approximately three in the morning. We can snap some photos to remember the event before descending to the Muktinath Valley, which is located at the foot of the Thorong La pass. We will be rewarded with breathtaking views when we reach the peak.

Drive from Muktinath to Tatopani 1190m/3904

We will go to the Muktinath Temple the next morning, which is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. The name Mukti Kshetra, which means “place of liberation or moksha” in Hinduism, is given to the temple. We will drive to Tatopani and spend the night there after touring the holy grounds.

Tatopani to Ghorepani 2810m/9219ft.

We are going to climb the Ghar Khola valley when we leave the Kali Gandaki valley. The trail passes through mountainous, terraced fields. We will ultimately arrive at a breathtaking rhododendron forest after passing through the villages of Shikha and Chitre along the route. When these trees bloom, they can reach a height of 8 to 10 feet and cover themselves in pink or crimson blossoms, creating an incredibly lovely sight. We will arrive at Ghorepani, a quaint village perched atop a ridge, as we continue on our journey.

Ghorepani to Tadapani 3210m/10532ft.

Our plan for today is to rise extremely early in order to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas from Poon Hill (3,210m/10,529ft). The most well-liked trekking location in the Annapurna region is Poon Hill, which provides amazing views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges up close as well as Mustang, Pokhara, and over 20 other of the tallest peaks. When we get back to Ghorepani for breakfast, we’ll take some time to photograph the breathtaking countryside. We will next go towards the east and ascend a neighboring mountain, making our way down through forests of rhododendron and past breathtaking waterfalls before arriving at Tadapani, where we will spend the night.

Trek to Ghandruk, drive to Pokhara 822m/2696ft.

From Tadapani to Ghandruk, our journey will pass through a dense rhododendron forest. Eventually, after more hiking, we will arrive at the quaint Gurung town of Ghandruk, a settlement that slopes and is primarily made up of stone buildings. We will be treated to amazing views of the Fishtail, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli mountains from this location. We will take some time to take in the view before boarding a private car that will transport us to the city of lakes in around two hours.

Drive back to Kathmandu

After we have our breakfast at the hotel, we will head toward Kathmandu. We’ll make a lunch stop along the way. We’ll check into our motels when we get there and relax for a bit. Later, we might wander through Thamel’s streets for a leisurely stroll or some souvenir shopping. We will toast to the successful end of our trip with a farewell dinner hosted by Kantipur Vacations in the evening.
